The previous record was 70,000 less, recorded on the same day in 2015. The date marked the previous deadline to sign up for a health plan to ensure health coverage beginning Jan. 1 before federal officials pushed back the date to Dec. 19.

Last week CMS officials said 4 million individuals had enrolled in health plans on HealthCare.gov between Nov. 1 and Dec. 11.
