90% of Philadelphia neighborhood residents support safe injection site

Most people who live near the proposed area for Philadelphia’s supervised injection site are in favor of its opening, according to a study published in the Journal of Urban Health.

For the study, researchers conducted in-person surveys with 360 residents and 79 business owners in Philadelphia’s Kensington neighborhood. Kensington has the highest rate of fatal drug overdoses in the city and is the likely location for the proposed supervised injection site.

Ninety percent of residents and 63 percent of business owners supported the supervised injection site.

The fate of the supervised injection site, overseen by the nonprofit group Safehouse, is still up in the air. Federal prosecutors in Philadelphia filed a civil lawsuit against the nonprofit in February, seeking to prevent the site’s opening. If the supervised injection site is deemed legal, Philadelphia would be the first city to open such a facility in the U.S.
