Barrier Islands Free Medical Clinic in Johns Island, S.C., is teaming up with the Maven Project, a national program that aims to connect volunteer physicians with underserved communities via telehealth services.

BIFMC is one of four free medical clinics across the country that was chosen to participate in the Maven Project's initiative. The partnership will allow volunteer physicians representing more than 40 clinical specialties to assist BIFMC with clinical approaches, develop patient care plans and triage referrals using the Maven Project's telehealth platform.

BIFMC providers can also request a consult or send case questions to a volunteer physician using the telehealth platform, video and/or phone. BIFMC's patient population covers individuals who fall at or below the poverty level and who face various social determinants of health challenges, such as lack of access to transportation and job security. Many individuals who visit the clinic have chronic health conditions, such as diabetes, hypertension and heart disease.
