Oklahoma State University leverages telemedicine to treat opioid addiction

Jackie Drees -

Stillwater-based Oklahoma State University will begin offering opioid addiction treatment services through telemedicine, Public Radio Tulsa reports.

The new services are part of OSU's partnership with Chicago-based Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation. The university's wellness and recovery clinics are affiliated with the organization.

OSU currently offers addiction treatment services at two clinics, but by adding telemedicine, the university will be able to provide services to patients located in rural areas.

"This is a really stigmatized disease," said Julie Croff, executive director at the OSU Center for Wellness and Recovery, according to the report. "And so, if it allows individuals to engage in their treatment more consistently because they can do it via their smartphone, then that's a really great tool that we should be offering."
