NATO has developed a multinational telemedicine system to help first responders consult with medical specialists in real time.
Through portable telemedicine kits, military and civilian paramedics in emergency scenes or combat zones can connect with medical specialists around the globe, to help with diagnosis and treatment recommendations.
"In the event of a disaster, telemedicine helps eliminate distance barriers and improves access to medical services that would often not be available on the ground, even in remote areas," said Sorin Ducaru, NATO assistant secretary general for emerging security challenges.
The telemedicine project, which launched in 2013, was led by scientists and experts from NATO allies Romania and the United States, alongside partner countries Finland, Moldova and Ukraine.
