Mayo's ICU telemedicine program reduced mortalities: This & 4 other insights about its telemedicine hub

Rochester, Minn.-based Mayo Clinic built and operates a central telemedicine hub that can simultaneously monitor multiple intensive care units  at once, according to VCDaily.

Here are five things to know about Mayo's telemedicine center.

1. The hub, stationed in Mayo's Rochester headquarters, is a remote surveillance effort and features a number of interactive video conferencing links that connect ICU specialists virtually to eight other ICUs in hospitals across the U.S.

2. It is staffed 24 hours a day, and experts can access all information stored on-site at each remote hospital.

3. Some of these hospitals have seen mortality rates 73 percent lower than expected.

4. According to VC Daily, because there is a second physician observing from afar, they are able to offer up a different view of what's happening and focus on informing better treatments.

5. Mayo's other telemedicine services include a concussion monitoring and long-term treatment program, remote specialist consultations, a telestroke program and telepresence robots that virtually visit other hospitals or even patient homes.
