Majority of healthcare pros pursuing telemedicine use enterprise approach, survey suggests

Jessica Kim Cohen -

Almost three-quarters of healthcare professionals are pursuing an enterprise approach, rather than a departmental approach, for their telemedicine programs, according to a Reach Health survey.

For the survey, the telemedicine software company asked 411 healthcare executives, physicians, nurses and other professionals about their organizations' priorities and challenges when rolling out telemedicine programs.

An enterprise approach to telemedicine involves managing and coordinating the service across various service lines and care settings, as opposed to a departmental approach, where services are managed by individual departments.

Forty-eight percent of respondents said their respective organizations used an enterprise telemedicine approach, while 26 percent said they were transitioning to an enterprise approach, despite starting with a departmental approach. The remaining 26 percent used a departmental approach.

For programs beginning with specialty care, some telemedicine service lines are more mature than others. The three most popular telemedicine specialties, ranked by percent of respondents who said their program had been operational for three-plus years, were stroke (40 percent), psychiatry and behavioral health (33 percent), and radiology (30 percent).
