GlobalMed to provide telehealth services to DOD: 3 things to know

Jessica Kim Cohen -

The U.S. Department of Defense authorized GlobalMed Nov. 18 to operate its telehealth services on the agency's network.

Here are three things to know about the certificate.

1. Under the DOD's Authority to Operate certification, GlobalMed will be able to deploy its video-based virtual health applications, hardware and software to the Military Health System.

2. The certification OKs GlobalMed to connect to patients in combat situations, bases overseas and 57 hospitals within the Military Health System.

3. GlobalMed, which is also the telehealth provider for the White House, is the "first provider of HIPAA-compliant clinical video collaboration" to obtain Authority to Operate certification, according to the company.

"This is a key milestone in the Defense Health Agency and military medicine's goal of developing a robust virtual healthcare solution throughout the entire military enterprise," said James J. Jones, PhD, director of medical evaluation and treatment unit at the White House. "It will drastically improve our ability to help pre-hospital combat medics, corpsmen and providers in austere environments."
