Chelsea Clinton joins telemedicine startup Nurx's board

Chelsea Clinton joined the board of San Francisco-based telemedicine startup Nurx, The Wall Street Journal reports.

Nurx launched in 2015 with the mission to deliver oral contraceptives to women across the U.S. Through the Nurx app, a patient can select their preferred brand of birth control pills and answer a set of questions about their healthcare needs and insurance. From there, a physician in their state reviews the request and writes a prescription, and the medication is delivered to the patient by mail.

Today, the service is live in 17 states and Washington, D.C., and Nurx has expanded its services to include emergency contraception and the HIV-prevention medication PrEP.

Ms. Clinton told The Wall Street Journal she supports the startup's mission to expand reproductive health services to women living in rural and conservative regions of the U.S., which she called reproductive healthcare "deserts."

"With efforts you see around the country to further restrict reproductive health access, we need to set the bar high to connect people with information and birth control access," she said. "We want to see as much innovation both in for-profit and not-for-profit models for sustained access, and this is a moment where we are more likely to see that in a private company."
