Amwell loses $39M in Q1, revenue up 7%: 4 things to know

Amwell reported $58 million in revenue for the first quarter of 2021, up 7 percent from $54 million during the same time last year.

Four things to know about Amwell's first quarter financial performance:

1. While Amwell posted a 7 percent uptick in revenue, the telehealth company reported a net loss of $39 million compared to $25 million in 2020.

2. Amwell recorded 1.6 million virtual care visits on its platform in the first quarter, up 120 percent from 725,000 virtual care visits during the same time last year.

3. Amwell posted $25 million in subscription revenue for the first quarter, up 13 percent from $22 million during the first quarter of 2020. Visit revenue also increased, growing 5 percent to $28 million in the first quarter compared to $27 million in the first quarter of 2020.

4. Amwell's total active providers increased to about 81,000 during the first quarter of 2021, up 240 percent compared to 24,000 during the first quarter of 2020.
