83% of healthcare execs plan to invest in telehealth this year: 5 insights

Ninety-eight percent of healthcare leaders believe offering telehealth services will give them competitive advantage over other organizations, according to an American Telemedicine Association report.

The report, titled 2017 Telemedicine Executive Leadership Survey, details findings from a survey of 171 executives from healthcare practices, hospital systems and telehealth service providers.

Here are five report findings.

1. The majority, 83 percent, of respondents say they will likely invest in telehealth this year.

2. In particular, 88 percent of respondents plan to invest in upgraded technology to support telehealth services.

3. The majority, 84 percent, also believe that telehealth services will strongly expand their organization's coverage and reach.

4. The respondents cited reimbursement and licensure as major challenges to telehealth implementation.

5. Almost half of respondents said the main driver in the telehealth market is consumer demand.
