106 hospitals, health systems that launched telehealth services in 2019

More than 100 hospitals and health systems implemented virtual care technology and services this year.

Here are 106 organizations that rolled out telehealth services in 2019, as reported by Becker's Hospital Review.

Editor's note: The implementations are listed in the order they were reported.

January:

1. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs tapped OptumServe to connect eligible veterans with lifestyle coaches via scheduled phone calls.

2. New Orleans-based Ochsner Health System partnered with Lambeth House, a retirement community in New Orleans, to launch a 12-month intervention study of dementia management using telehealth.

3. NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital in New York City partnered with health technology company Philips to add remote patient monitoring to its telehealth capabilities.

4. Cuero (Texas) Regional Hospital partnered with multispecialty physician group Access Physicians to provide its patients with cardiology services via telehealth.

February:

5. Charlottesville-based University of Virginia Health System rolled out a new telehealth program to help lung disease prevention, diagnosis and treatment in the Appalachian region of Virginia.

6. Willmar, Minn.-based Rice Memorial Hospital unveiled its new heart-failure telemedicine program as part of a collaboration with CentraCare Health in St. Cloud, Minn.

7. Marshfield (Wis.) Clinic Health System began deploying telehealth software from remote monitoring provider Health Recovery Solutions to reduce avoidable emergence department visits.

8. The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Rural Utilities Service awarded Bethlehem, Pa.-based St. Luke's University Health Network $401,700 to launch a telehealth program.

9. Indianapolis-based St. Vincent Health partnered with a local elementary school to provide virtual appointments to students in need of medical attention during school hours.

10. Peoria, Ill.-based OSF Healthcare established a telemedicine program that allows neurologists to conduct virtual visits with patients in remote locations.

11. Shriners Hospital for Children — St. Louis partnered with Newton (Kan.) Medical Center on Shriners' first telehealth location in Kansas.

12. Flagler Hospital in St. Augustine, Fla., included new telehealth options for patients as part of a rebranding strategy.

13. Charlottesville-based University of Virginia Health System expanded current and added new telehealth initiatives focusing on chronic disease management.

14. Akron, Ohio-based Summa Health launched a new telehealth solution called Virtual Visit, which allows providers to diagnose and treat more than 20 common medical conditions.

March:

15. Birmingham-based Children's of Alabama hospital implemented digital health developer Locus Health's telehealth platform for remote monitoring of pediatric cardiology patients.

16. University of Virginia Health System's Children's Hospital in Charlottesville created a telehealth app with Locus Health, a digital health developer, to enhance patient follow-up care.

17. Albany, N.Y.-based St. Peter's Health Partners and United Concierge Medicine, a telemedicine provider, launched a program to improve medical care for individuals who have been sexually assaulted.

18. The Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston launched virtual urgent care services for patients in rural areas of the state.

19. Grand Blanc, Mich.-based McLaren Health Care launched a telehealth service for patients seeking non-emergency care.

April:

20. Walla Walla, Wash.-based Providence St. Mary Medical Center launched an emergency telemedicine program for pediatric patients after receiving a financial donation and letter from a local family of a child who previously needed emergency medical care.

21. Stony Brook (N.Y.) Medicine launched a mobile stoke unit program, which incorporates telemedicine to allow emergency medical technicians to communicate with the health system's neurologists through video.

22. Teladoc Health began working with Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center to develop its first consumer-specific pediatric telehealth platform.

23. Indianapolis-based Indiana University Health began rolling out 24/7 virtual behavioral health visits in emergency departments across its network of hospitals.

24. New Hyde Park, N.Y.-based Northwell Health opened its new emergency room telepsychiatry center at Lenox Health Greenwich Village hospital in New York City.

25. Jacksonville, Fla.-based Baptist Health added remote monitoring technology from Advanced ICU Care, an intensive care unit telemedicine provider, for patients at Baptist Medical Center Nassau.

26. Valhalla, N.Y.-based Westchester Medical Center Health Network implemented a telemedicine program that allows neonatologists at Maria Fareri Children's Hospital in Valhalla to provide remote care to newborn patients at HealthAlliance Hospital.

27. Two Altamonte Springs, Fla.-based AdventHealth hospitals in Georgia began working with Erlanger Health System in Chattanooga, Tenn., to provide neurology and stroke care through telemedicine.

May:

28. Minneapolis-based Allina Health and Hayward (Wis.) Area Memorial Hospital launched a telemedicine program geared toward expanding virtual neurology care.

29. AdventHealth Dade City (Fla.), part of AdventHealth system in Altamonte Springs, Fla., added Advanced ICU Care's remote monitoring technology for patients in its intensive care unit.

30. St. Louis-based SSM Health began offering residents in Wisconsin and Missouri — established patients or not, health insurance or not — $25 virtual visits within an hour of requesting an appointment.

31. Hazard, Ky.-based Appalachian Regional Healthcare System rolled out Advanced ICU Care's remote monitoring technology for intensive care unit patients across all 12 of its hospitals.

32. Ochsner LSU Health Monroe (La.), an Ochsner Health System hospital, added videoconferencing technology and more care training to its intensive care unit telemedicine program.

33. Texas A&M University Health Science Center in Bryan teamed up with Project Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes, a telehealth teaching model for clinicians, on a program to address the opioid epidemic.

34. Shriners Hospitals for Children — Chicago partnered with Angola, Ind.-based Cameron Memorial Community Hospital to offer telehealth care to pediatric patients with orthopedic and spine conditions.

35. Pittsburgh-based UPMC launched its telemedicine company Infectious Disease Connect to help hospitals that experience shortages in infectious diseases specialists provide care to patients.

36. Chicago-based CommonSpirit Health partnered with Contessa, an acute home care management company, to offer its patients home recovery care services including virtual visits by a physician and remote monitoring.

37. Ft. Myers, Fla.-based Lee Health is offering a new virtual care service that allows patients to use telehealth to receive treatment and prescription medication from their providers.

38. Charleston-based Medical University of South Carolina began providing telehealth services to Hampton Regional Medical Center in Varnville, S.C.

39. Bangor, Maine-based St. Joseph Healthcare installed a telemedicine system for its rheumatology department to offer appointments to patients who are unable to travel to the hospital.

40. Oregon Health & Science University Doernbecher Children's Hospital deployed developed a digital health platform to improve follow-up care for cardiology and neonatal intensive care unit patients. 

June:

41. Sioux Falls, S.D.-based Sanford Health began providing patients access to TytoCare's portable patient examination device for telehealth appointments.

42. Randolph, Vt.-based Gifford Health Care expanded its psychiatric services for emergency department patients by using Alpine Telehealth's video conferencing abilities.

43. Houston-based Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center launched a telehealth platform that allows veterans to receive mental health services remotely.

44. Lebanon-N.H.-based Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center partnered with Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington to help expand care for pediatric cardiology and urology patients through telemedicine.

45. Richmond, Texas-based OakBend Medical Center implemented a telemedicine cart that allows the health system's cardiologists to virtually examine patients to determine whether they should be admitted to the hospital.

46. UHS Healthcare rolled out virtual walk-in visits where patients and providers can connect through video to discuss minor medical conditions.

47. Billings (Mont.) Clinic partnered with Blue Sky Telehealth, a neurological virtual care company, to provide neurology and stroke care during the hospital's overnight hours.

48. Pittsburgh-based Allegheny Health Network partnered with Mercy Virtual, a telehealth services provider, to develop a new virtual care model for critically ill patients.

49. Little Rock-based University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences launched a digital health clinic that uses telemedicine to treat spinal patients statewide.

50. NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital in New York City launched the Hauser Institute for Health Innovation in recognition of the more than $50 million philanthropists Rita Hauser and Gustave Hauser have donated to the hospital's telemedicine programs.

July:

51. Cleveland-based MetroHealth System rolled out its urgent care telemedicine program to college students at select universities in Ohio, Kentucky, Texas and Florida.

52. Community Medical Center in Missoula, Mont., partnered with telemedicine provider SOC Telemed on 24/7 neurology and stroke care coverage.

53. Nashville, Tenn.-based Ascension Saint Thomas hospital partnered with Contessa, an acute home care management company, to offer its patients home recovery care services such as telehealth appointments and remote monitoring.

54. West Virginia United Health System and Mon Health Medical Center, both located in Morgantown, W.Va., teamed up on telemedicine services to expand neurology and stroke care for patients at Mon Health's facilities.

55. The USDA granted $465,000 to Marietta Memorial Hospital in Ohio to implement a telemedicine program for opioid addiction.

56. The Department of Veterans Affairs launched a telehealth pilot program at select VA medical centers and remote facilities across the country to increase patients' access to audiology care specialists.

57. Broaddus Hospital in Philippi, W.Va., developed a telehealth program that allows patients with diabetes to teleconference with a dietician or a certified diabetes educator instead of traveling to the hospital for an appointment.

58. St. Luke Health Services in Oswego, N.Y., partnered with telemedicine provider Curvai Health on a program that offers its patients virtual care anytime day or night.

59. Grand Rapids, Mich.-based Metron Integrated Health Systems launched its new "smarter heart" cardiac rehab program and telehealth services.

60. University of Louisville (Ky.) Hospital's burn center launched a telehealth pilot program to help reduce patients' barriers to follow-up care.

61. Dalhart, Texas-based Coon Memorial Hospital launched telehealth services that connect its cardiology and dermatology patients with specialists through video and audio conferencing technology.

62. St. Mark's Hospital in Salt Lake City is offering a new telemedicine service that provides pregnant patients with at-home checkup kits and virtual appointments.

63. The University of Chicago Medicine partnered with PinnacleCare to offer remote second opinions to patients across the country.

August:

64. University of Alabama at Birmingham cardiologists and rheumatologists began using telehealth to treat patients at four rural medical centers across the state.

65. UCLA partnered with More Health, a digital healthcare company, to provide patients across the globe with second opinions on their respective medical diagnoses through telemedicine technology.

66. Flagler Health+, the telehealth spinout of St. Augustine, Fla.-based Flagler Hospital, developed an online platform dubbed "virtual health village" that allows patients to access virtual care appointments, communicate with providers and view their health information, among other capabilities.

67. Lebanon, N.H.-based Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center launched its new telemedicine intensive care unit program to help extend care to critically ill patients at rural hospitals.

68. Minneapolis-based Shriners Healthcare for Children – Twin Cities partnered with Boys Town (Neb.) National Research Hospital to provide telehealth consultations for patients who live hours away from Shriners facilities.

69. Northern Inyo Healthcare District in Bishop, Calif., was granted funding to establish a new telemedicine-equipped room after the successful launch of the organization's virtual care substance abuse program.

70. University of Alabama at Birmingham began providing 24/7 nephrology care through telehealth to help treat kidney patients at Whitfield Regional Hospital in Demopolis, Ala.

71. Amita Health St. Mary's Hospital Kankakee (Ill.) launched telemedicine services as part of its neurology and neurosurgery program.

72. Memorial Health System in Marietta, Ohio, unveiled its new mobile application that allows patients to participate in virtual visits with their provider.

September:

73. Lafayette (La.) General Health released its new mobile telehealth app.

74. University of Pittsburgh researchers developed a blood pressure home-monitoring program to more quickly detect hypertension levels of postpartum women.

75. Covenant Health Plainview in Texas implemented a two-way audio and video device that allows clinicians to continually monitor patients who require more constant watch.

76. Cleveland Clinic launched its first telehealth-equipped neurology step down unit to support constant monitoring of epilepsy and stroke patients' brain activity.

77. York, Pa.-based WellSpan Health deployed its new digital urgent care clinic for patients to access entirely online.

78. Gila Regional Medical Center in Silver City, N.M., acquired telemedicine neurology equipment to diagnose a stroke more quickly in emergency department patients.

79. Lebanon, N.H.-based Dartmouth-Hitchcock announced it will extend its telemedicine services to provide critical care neonatal services to nonprofit, community hospital Littleton (N.H.) Regional Healthcare patients.

80. University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital in Iowa City tapped Charlottesville, Va.-based Locus Health to provide patients and their families with software to monitor vital health information from home.

81. Jerseyville, Ill.-based Jersey Community Hospital launched a telemedicine hospitalist program to help address onsite staffing challenges.

82. Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Stephenville, part of Arlington-based Texas Health Resources, launched telehealth-based 24/7 care for sexual assault victims.

83. Stillwater-based Oklahoma State University began offering opioid addiction treatment services through telemedicine.

October:  

84. Bozeman (Mont.) Health and St. Peter's Health in Helena, Mont., partnered to establish a neonatal care and maternal-fetal medicine center that uses telemedicine technology to reach more high-risk patients.

85. Greenville (Tenn.) Community Hospital East partnered with Advanced ICU Care, an intensive care unit telemedicine provider.

86. Tampa (Fla.) General Hospital opened a standalone booth within the hospital in which employees can access on-demand, real-time consultations with physicians and automated pharmaceutical services.

87. Novant Health partnered with Tyto Care, a New York City-based developer of digital tools for at-home examination and diagnosis, to expand the Winston-Salem, N.C.-based system's virtual care offerings.

88. The Department of Veterans Affairs launched a multisite pilot program that uses Philips technology to provide remote and virtual care to veterans at their local veterans service organizations.

89. Cleveland Clinic announced plans to launch a digital health company. 

90. Freeport, Ill.-based FHN Healthcare launched its new telehealth application, FHNow, which allows individuals to access a provider directly from their smartphone or computer.

91. Jackson-based University of Mississippi Medical Center released a new mobile health app designed to treat patients with non-emergency conditions.

92. Sioux Falls, S.D.-based Avera Health received a $4.3 million grant to develop a national telehealth certificate program that aims to standardize and enhance the quality of care delivered via telehealth platforms.

November:  

93. Paramus, N.J.-based Bergen New Bridge Medical Center unveiled a new telehealth service line aimed at diagnosing and treating emergency medical conditions.

94. The Department of Veterans Affairs began rolling out the use of private enclosure rooms, called pods, which veterans can use to conduct telehealth appointments from remote areas.

95. St. Louis Children's Hospital and its Washington University Heart Center integrated Locus Health's real-time remote monitoring platform into the discharge process for high-risk infant cardiac patients.

96. Columbia, Tenn.-based Maury Regional Health launched its own telehealth app, offering patients affordable, near-instant urgent care virtual visits.

97. Fort Dodge, Iowa-based UnityPoint Health — Trinity Regional Medical Center welcomed six new hospitalists to its staff who connect with and examine patients using telemedicine technology.

98. Mayo Clinic Health System brought its telestroke program to the La Crosse, Wis., inpatient setting.

99. Cincinnati-based TriHealth was named the recipient of a $3.84 million grant from bi3, the grantmaking initiative of TriHealth co-sponsor Bethesda Inc., to fund the development and implementation of a new virtual care program.

December:

100. WVU Medicine St. Joseph's Hospital and United Hospital Center in Bridgeport, W.Va., clinicians established a telemedicine-based connection to virtually communicate with one another and treat infectious disease patients.

101. Stanford (Calif.) Health Care launched telehealth services within its pediatric emergency department to allow the health system's pediatric specialists at other facilities to provide care for patients virtually,

102. Shelbyville, Ill.-based HSHS Good Shepherd Hospital and Joslin Diabetes Center Affiliate at HSHS Medical Group launched a telehealth system that helps patients who reside in rural areas receive diabetes care.

103. Chattanooga, Tenn.-based Erlanger Health System began using telemedicine technology to extend neurology and stroke care to patients at Floyd Medical Center in Rome, Ga.

104. Charleston, S.C.-based Roper St. Francis Healthcare deployed Advanced ICU Care's telemedicine intensive care unit services at three of its hospitals.

105. Orlando (Fla.) Health expanded access to its virtual visit system for all patients throughout Central Florida.

106. Saint Peter's University tapped Vox Telehealth to help the New Brunswick, N.J.-based hospital incorporate virtual care services with its enhanced recovery after surgery program.
