Walgreens, in partnership with Alphabet's drone service Wing, will test an on-demand drone delivery service starting next month.
The drone will deliver food, over-the-counter drugs and other health and wellness items to customers within minutes. Prescription drug deliveries will not be available.
The companies said customers can select from more than 100 products or six pre-made "packs" via the Wing app. The pre-built packs have items in the following categories: first aid, kids' snacks, cough/cold, baby, allergy and pain. The cough/cold "pack" has a variety of cough and cold products customers may need to get healthy, for example.
The project will first be piloted in Christiansburg, Va. If the pilot goes well, the company plans to expand to other markets in the U.S.
The move comes as retail pharmacy giants work to remain competitive against companies like Amazon, which offer customers convenient delivery.
