UPS expanding healthcare warehouse, distribution network

Alia Paavola -

United Parcel Service plans to expand its healthcare-dedicated warehouse and distribution network, according to the Atlanta Business Chronicle.

UPS will add 1.3 million square feet of space this year to help handle its recent healthcare investments. The company aims to add 4 million square feet of healthcare-dedicated warehouse and distribution space by 2020.

Some of the expansions include a 450,000-square-foot facility in Louisville, Ky., and a 315,000-square-foot center in Harrisburg, Pa.

Both of the new sites are located near UPS' current healthcare operations. For example, UPS has a center in Pennsylvania that offers medical device decontamination and instrument inspection, according to the report.

"Expansion of our healthcare warehouse and distribution space is a direct result of the tremendous growth in outsourced pharmaceutical and medical device storage and fulfillment needs, and in response to logistical challenges and trends including home health and direct-to-patient services," UPS spokesperson David Graves told the Atlanta Business Chronicle.
