Pittsburgh-based UPMC Health Plan partnered with Express Scripts to develop the Center for Value-Based Purchasing for Pharmaceuticals.

The center — housed within UPMC's academic medical center — seeks to develop, implement and scale out new value-based payment models for medications, according to the report.

UPMC Health Plan's CMO William Shrank, MD, and Chief Pharmacy Officer Chronis Manolis, RPh, will lead the center's research efforts on pharmaceutical outcomes and progressive payment models.

"We anticipate that the models and learnings from this effort should be highly scalable to other insurance providers and pharmacy benefits … to rapidly influence pharmaceutical purchasing nationwide and promote greater value in medication use," Dr. Shrank said in a news release.
