Trump calls for drug cost measure in AHCA

President Donald Trump on Monday expressed his desire to add a provision to the Republican-proposed American Health Care Act to lower high drug costs, reports Reuters.

"We're going to have a great competitive bidding process. Medicine prices will be coming way down," President Trump said during Monday night's rally in Louisville, Ky.

"We're trying to add it to this bill and if we can't, we'll have it right after," the president said, according to Reuters.

President Trump has long advocated for more competitive bidding on drugs. Earlier this month, he met with Reps. Elijah Cummings, D-Md., and Peter Welch, D-Vt., to discuss strategies for lowering drug costs. The Representatives shared a draft of a House bill that would allow the federal government to negotiate drug costs, and President Trump was "enthusiastic" about tackling the issue, according to Rep. Cummings.
