Supply chain tip of the week: How to gain clinical support to make product standardization efforts successful

The most effective way to gain clinical support is to engage with physicians and include them in the standardization process from day one.

Either having one-on-one discussions or communicating with staff members who know them and their needs well. While you have these conversations, it is important to dispel the myth that all supply variation is due to clinical preference. Product variation can develop over time and can be caused by industry consolidation, contractual or equipment constraints and clinical practice variation.

Hospitals and health systems who have a culture in which physicians are regularly involved with managing overall business results, are far more likely to embrace the standardization process. However, a standardization initiative does not necessarily require physicians to invest a lot of time in the transition. For example, most standardization work can be delegated to surgical technicians familiar with the surgeon’s techniques. Clinicians want to see the data-driven rationale for standardization Once they do, they can become important champions of and catalysts for change.
