Smartphone app alerts providers, patients of FDA device recalls

Alia Paavola -

A new smartphone app that alerts patients and providers of FDA medical devices recalls was launched this week.

The app, SoomSafety, launched July 15 by tech company Soom, allows users to scan a medical device's barcode or a patient's medical device identification card to receive instructions for use and safety and recall information.

Once a device is scanned and stored on the app, it automatically checks for recall information and provides next steps in the event of a recall.

"We built SoomSafety to help patients and caregivers relying on implanted medical devices and using medical devices at home answer one critical question, 'Is this medical device safe to use?'" said Charlie Kim, president and CEO of Soom. "Our technology makes it possible to connect previously siloed medical device data, giving patients — and their caregivers — more proactive control over their health and safety."
