Mercy Iowa City worker donates old hospital linen to make items for needy

Alia Paavola -

Terri Lee Doehrmann, a worker in the linen services department at Mercy Iowa City (Iowa), spends hours each week sorting through hospital linens for signs of wear or tear that would make them unusable, according to The Gazette

But instead of throwing away unusable scrubs, gowns and bed sheets, Ms. Doehrmann donates them to a group of quilters that sew clothing and blankets for those in need.

“It’s amazing" what they do with the old linen, Ms. Doehrmann told the Gazette. “I'm glad it’s not going to a landfill and someone is getting the benefit of them."

Clothing and quilts are donated to those living in poverty around the world, including those in homeless shelters in Iowa City, according to the report.
