How one hospital turned time savings into more revenue

Would you rather save time or money? When both are in short supply, this can be an impossible question for hospitals to answer. 

 Phelps Memorial Health Center is a critical access hospital that saw first-hand how a few small changes made a stunning impact on its operations. 

Like many hospitals and health centers, billers at the center used manual processing for a portion of their claims and multiple portals and screens to process the rest. It was a slow and cumbersome procedure.

The efficiency created by switching to electronic claims exceeded staff expectations, and they were delighted to discover they could process and monitor Medicare claims without having to access the direct data entry system.  

It wasn’t long before they started seeing real results. Manual claims intervention dropped by 90% and manual remits dropped 75%. With less demand on their time, billers were able to focus on delinquent accounts, clear out backlogs and reduce A/R days.

"My billers are no longer touching every single claim, and we have increased our clean claims rate, so that was a huge win," explained Rachel Dallmann, the center’s director of patient financial services.
