Healthcare accounts for 4% of global CO2 emissions: 6 ways for systems to decarbonize

The latest United Nations climate report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change gives a stark warning to humanity to change before the window of opportunity runs out. Given that healthcare is affected by climate change, as it brings more disease and illness, as well as contributes 4 percent of global carbon dioxide emissions, health systems should consider strategies to decarbonize their practices, according to a Feb. 28 Phillips blog.

Six strategies mentioned in the article:

  1. Switch to a renewable energy provider and invest in medical equipment that conserves energy.

  2. Look into alternative equipment that uses less precious resources compared to conventional equipment.

  3. Embrace innovative service models where medical equipment is rented or paid for per use instead of buying it outright.

  4. Use equipment upgrades and service fixes instead of buying whole new devices. Also consider using refurbished equipment, and be sure to recycle old equipment once it has been completely worn out.

  5. Look to telehealth and virtual care to consolidate physical practices and reduce carbon emissions through reduced travel.

  6. Seriously engage with supply chain vendors to ensure suppliers are also taking sustainability and carbon emission reductions seriously, setting clear goals to achieve their aims.
