5 health systems investing in express care

Health systems across the U.S. are looking for ways to improve the overall health of the communities they serve while cutting costs. One emerging trend to reconcile these seemingly competing goals is investing in primary care and express care sites.

These investment could be the key to lowering costs, improving patient satisfaction and reducing hospitalizations or unnecessary emergency department visits, according to an op-ed published in the New England Journal of Medicine.

Here are five hospital or health systems investing in primary, retail or urgent care sites as reported by Becker's Hospital Review since July.

1. Novant Health to open health clinics inside Walgreens
Novant Health, a 15-hospital system in Winston-Salem, N.C., will open retail health clinics inside several Walgreens pharmacies in the state.

2. Indiana hospital investing in 4 standalone ERs, urgent care centers
Noblesville, Ind.-based Riverview Health broke ground on its latest of four planned standalone emergency room and urgent care facilities.

3. Michigan hospital building 7 primary care sites
Kalamazoo, Mich.-based Bronson Methodist Hospital is building seven primary care locations in the state.

4. SSM, Paladina to offer primary care with no copays, out-of-pocket expenses
St. Louis-based SSM Health and Denver-based Paladina Health have created a joint venture that will offer direct-to-employer primary care to businesses in the St. Louis region. The new company expects to open its first clinic by the end of this year.

5. Fairview Health, U of Minnesota to open retail clinic at Mall of America
M Health Fairview — a new brand that combines Fairview Health Services, the University of Minnesota and University of Minnesota Physicians, all based in Minneapolis — will open a walk- in clinic in the Mall of America.
