Tobey Hospital in Massachusetts to End Inpatient Pediatric Care

New Bedford, Mass.-based Southcoast Hospitals Group announced Tobey Hospital in Wareham, Mass., will no longer offer inpatient pediatric services.

In August, Southcoast Hospitals Group, the three-hospital organization under Southcoast Health System, plans to shift inpatient pediatric care to St. Luke's Hospital in New Bedford due to Tobey Hospital's low inpatient pediatric volume. In fiscal year 2011, the hospital had only 42 inpatient pediatric admissions, which averages to less than one patient admission per week. Tobey Hospital will continue to provide pediatric care at its emergency department.

Late this summer, Boston Children's Hospital and its physicians will partner with local physicians to provide hospital-based pediatrics for Southcoast, according to the release. Boston Children's Hospital will update Southcoast facilities, provide an on-site medical director and 24/7 pediatric care at St. Luke's Hospital and offer telephone consultations to EDs at Tobey Hospital and Charlton Memorial Hospital in Fall River, Mass.
