6 Core Principles of a Redesigned Health System

Staff -
The Physicians Foundation, a non-profit organization working to advance physicians' work and facilitate care delivery to patients, presents six core principles of a redesigned health system in a new report.

The report, "A Blueprint for a More Effective, Physician-Directed Health System," outlines a health system that focuses on the patient-physician relationship and physicians' ability to ease patients' suffering and costs. Here are the six principles of this new system described in the report:

1. Offer patients multiple choices in relationships with providers and clinical solutions and share with them the savings resulting from making high-value choices.

2. Consolidate and simplify payment transactions to reduce both provider and insurer overhead expenses.

3. Ensure everyone bears some of the economic risk and cost based on their ability to pay.

4. Strengthen the patient-physician relationship by paying on a subscription basis for physicians' services; patient-physician relationships should vary in intensity and focus based on the patient's needs and health risks.

5. Improve teamwork and continuity in healthcare provision by paying on a bundled basis for complete solutions to medical problems, including care planning and recovery/rehabilitation.

6. Encourage physicians in integrated delivery systems to assume clinical and cost management responsibilities of their patient population.
