Sixty percent of U.S. hospital executives expect bigger budgets in 2013, with the highest level of spending dedicated to IT, according to a study by L.E.K Consulting, a global management consulting firm.

The study was conducted in December 2012. Researchers surveyed nearly 200 hospital CEOs, CFOs, COOs, material managers and purchasing directors.

The most critical initiatives of hospitals' strategic plans in 2013 will be cost management, data connectivity and utilization of outcomes data. According to the study, 2013 will also see disruptions to traditional healthcare models and shifts in purchasing decisions. Here are other key findings from the study:

•    Over 80 percent of surveyed hospital executives report that their organizations are making future plans to join or are already participating in an accountable care organization.
•    Twelve percent of hospital executives report that their organization will likely adopt payor capabilities over the next five years.
•    Nearly 80 percent of administrators said group purchasing organizations have the greatest influence on their purchasing decisions.
