An article published in the American Journal of Sports Medicine examines predictors of early revision surgery after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction.
The researchers examined patients who underwent primary ACL reconstruction with the hamstring tendon or bone-patellar tendon-bone autografts and looked for revision surgery within 24 months of the initial procedure. There were 16,930 patients included in the study gathered from the Swedish National Knee Ligament Register from Jan. 1, 2005 to Dec. 13, 2013.
1. The two-year revision rate was 1.82 percent.
2. There were no significant differences in revision rate between men and women. Men had a 1.74 percent revision rate and women had a 1.93 percent revision rate.
3. Revision rate predictors include:
• Younger age in both men and women
• Soccer playing
4. Individuals who were both younger and played soccer had a three-fold increased risk.
5. There was no significant association for height, weight, body mass index or tobacco use for patients who underwent early revision procedures.
