Solutions for Life: Helping End America’s IV Fluid Shortages

In collaboration with B. Braun Medical Inc. -

IV fluids are the very lifeblood of American healthcare—helping doctors and nurses hydrate their patients, administer drugs, and even replace lost blood volume.

These fluids are fundamental to patient care. But in recent years, our nation’s supplies have been severely depleted., thanks in large part to destructive weather events and severe influenza seasons.

In fact, in the past few years, the United States has seen IV fluid shortages approach crisis levels., forcing healthcare providers and facilities to delay patient treatment or use an alternate technique. The result? A decline in patient care with already thin medical staff resources stretched even thinner. The FDA and other government agencies routinely ask IV fluid manufacturers to assess their ability to increase production capacity to address the shortages.

One company, B. Braun, is doing just that.

See the full story behind B. Braun’s $1 billion Solutions for Life initiative.

Solutions for Life

Solutions for Life is B. Braun’s $1 billion IV fluid production and manufacturing initiative aimed at not only meeting today’s demand for fluids, but ensuring future demands are met as well. It’s a long-term commitment that seeks to alleviate IV fluid shortages in the American healthcare system so we never face another shortage crisis again.

As part of the Solutions for Life initiative, B. Braun has made significant investments in new and updated IV therapy manufacturing facilities—strategically located on the east and west coast—to create reliable, long-term supplies for American healthcare providers.

Irvine

Modernized facility in Irvine, CA.

Over the next several years, B. Braun expects to more than double its IV fluid production capacity.

But they didn’t stop there.

To help ensure the U.S. never runs dangerously low on IV fluids again, B. Braun has also obtained FDA approval for IV solutions manufactured in Europe. It’s an emergency back-up plan put in place should circumstances lead to shortages in the future.

Producing IV Solutions Responsibly

Despite these efforts to aggressively ramp up domestic IV fluid production, B. Braun remains committed to patient and environmental safety. As the first and only supplier manufacturing a full line of IV solution products that are PVC-free and DEHP-free, B. Braun has a long history of responsible IV fluid production. This further solidifies the company’s focus on patient safety and environmental stewardship.

Between the additional capacity of IV fluids here in the United States, its global backup plan, and a commitment to producing IV solutions responsibly, B. Braun is determined to help end IV fluid shortages affecting the American healthcare system.

Not just for today, but for good.
