US News: 10 best hospitals for pediatric cardiology, heart surgery

Alyssa Rege -

In honor of Congenital Heart Defect Awareness Week, which begins Feb. 7, U.S. News & World Report ranked the top 10 hospitals for pediatric cardiology and heart surgery.

Congenital heart defects occur when the heart or blood vessels close to the heart develop abnormally before a baby is born, the report states. The CDC estimates 1 percent of babies — about 40,000 — are born with congenital heart defects each year. However, most do not learn of their condition until adulthood.

While care and survival rates for babies with congenital heart defects have improved, the condition remains one of the leading causes of birth defect-associated sickness and death, according to the report.
