Top 5 cities where women have the best odds to break the glass ceiling

Emily Rappleye -

Three of the top five cities where women have the best odds of promotion are on the West Coast, according to a study from Smart Asset, a personal finance technology company.

The study is based on 2018 data from the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. The data set includes private sector employers with 100 or more employees. To determine how tough the glass ceiling is to break in various metro areas, Smart Asset compared the rates of promotion for men and women, creating what it calls a "glass ceiling ratio." A ratio of 1 means the odds of promotion are equal. A ratio above 1 shows women have better odds than men, and below 1 shows men have better odds than women.  Rates of promotion were determined by comparing the number of managers to the number of white-collar workers for each gender.

Here are the top five cities and their glass ceiling ratios:

1. San Francisco metro area — 0.83

2. Washington, D.C., metro area — 0.81

3. Seattle metro area — 0.80

4. New York metro area — 0.74

5. Los Angeles metro area — 0.74
