IU Health becomes nation's 7th largest transplant center: 4 things to know

Indianapolis-based Indiana University Health was named the seventh largest transplant center in the U.S., and the third largest in the Midwest, according to data provided by the U.S. Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network.

Here are four things to know.

1. IU Health is Indiana's largest and most comprehensive organ transplant center. Physicians performed 489 transplants in 2016.

2. The health system's physicians performed 80 percent of the 616 total transplants recorded in Indiana last year.

3. IU Health's nationally ranked individual organ transplant programs include:

  • Pancreas — No. 2 (50 transplants)
  • Intestine — No. 4 (15 transplants)
  • Liver — No. 5 (160 transplants)
  • Lung — No. 14 (52 transplants)
  • Kidney — No. 28 (185 transplants)
  • Heart — No. 42 (27 transplants)

4. "We're proud of these numbers as they ultimately represent lives saved," said Jonathan Fridell, MD, chief of abdominal transplantation for IU Health. "The high number of transplants we perform means we offer patients better quality care, shorter wait times for organs and the depth of experience needed to handle the most complex cases."
