How 29 physician specialties rank on happiness outside of work

Rheumatologists, general surgeons, public health and preventive medicine physicians, and allergists/immunologists are the happiest outside of work compared to other specialists, according to a new Medscape report.

The report surveyed more than 15,000 physicians in more than 29 specialties.

Here's how 29 physician specialties ranked on happiness outside of work, based on the survey:

Rheumatology – 60 percent

General surgery – 60 percent

Public health and preventive medicine – 59 percent

Allergy and immunology – 59 percent

Orthopedics – 58 percent

Urology – 58 percent

Ophthalmology – 58 percent

Pediatrics – 57 percent

Dermatology – 56 percent

Physical medicine and rehabilitation – 55 percent

Plastic surgery – 55 percent

OB-GYN – 54 percent

Emergency medicine – 53 percent

Otolaryngology – 53 percent

Infectious diseases – 52 percent

Radiology – 51 percent

Psychiatry – 51 percent

Oncology – 51 percent

Cardiology – 51 percent

Nephrology – 51 percent
