In a press release from CEP America, Dr. Wesley Curry, CEO of company for 21 years, to receive prestigious James D. Mills Award for Outstanding Contribution to Emergency Medicine

Wesley Curry, MD, FACEP, the CEO Emeritus for CEP America, has been named the recipient of the James D. Mills Award for Outstanding Contribution to Emergency Medicine by the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP). Dr. Curry was recognized for his more than 30 years’ of service to the profession as a physician, industry leader and highly successful CEO.

ACEP, which represents the nation’s 37,000 board certified emergency medicine physicians, has been giving the award since 1978. The James D. Mills Outstanding Contribution to Emergency Medicine Award is presented to an active, life, or honorary member for significant contributions to emergency medicine. The award is named after the late James D. Mills, Jr., MD, the second president of the College. Selection criteria are based on the recipient's significant contributions to emergency medicine, including in the areas of improved patient care delivery models, quality of care improvements, and public health. The award will be presented at the 2017 ACEP Scientific Assembly held in Washington, DC October 29 – Nov. 1.

Historically the James D. Mills Award has been awarded to advocates for the profession, academics, and other noted leaders. The selection of Dr. Curry highlights not only his years of service to the organization, and stature among his colleagues, but also the recognition that emergency medicine must evolve to meet the demands of today’s healthcare industry.

“Emergency Medicine has changed considerably since I began practicing in the 1970s,” said Dr. Curry. “Today it must incorporate art, science and a recognition that to provide our best care to patients, we must also understand and adapt to the business and regulatory factors impacting our profession.”

Dr. Curry’s professional accomplishments include the establishment of independent emergency medicine physician groups, the promotion of team-based care, championing the use of technology in the ED and growing CEP America from a regional provider of ED services to a national provider of multi-specialty acute care solutions. The company he has worked with for more than 35 years is now one of the top five in the industry.

Dr. Curry’s contributions to his profession also include advocacy for legislative issues at the state and national level, collaboration with other industry leaders and executives, including competitors, and strong support for the real world issues that matter to all emergency physicians.
“Our company is honored that ACEP has chosen Dr. Curry for this prestigious award,” said Imamu Tomlinson, MD, MBA, the CEO of CEP America and a practicing ED physician. “He is known for many accomplishments in the profession, as well as for inspiring others. One of his favorite quotes, which has become meaningful to me is, ‘The status quo is not a strategic plan, and we must be prepared for it when the future finds us.’ Those words have motivated myself and others to do our best for our patients, the communities we serve and the profession.”

Dr. Curry has a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Stanford University and a Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree from Harvard Medical School. He completed his Internal Medicine residency at the University of California, San Francisco. He has held a number of key industry positions, including board member for the Emergency Department Practice Management Association (EDPMA), past president of the California Chapter of ACEP, and as a member of numerous committees and task forces for ACEP.
