50 states ranked by percentage of adults with unmet mental health needs

Alia Paavola -

Nearly a quarter of adults with a mental illness reported they were unable to receive the treatment they needed for various reasons, including no insurance, inability to pay or shortage of psychiatrists in the area, according to a new report from Mental Health America, a nonprofit mental health advocacy organization.

In its report, Mental Health America ranks states by the number of adults who reported they had an unmet mental health need in the last year.

The survey uses national survey data to compare access to care regardless of differences in states populations.
