To compile the rankings, U.S. News evaluated all 50 states using 71 metrics across eight categories, including healthcare. For the healthcare ranking, the publication assessed states based on three benchmarks: healthcare access, public health and healthcare quality metrics.
The five best states for healthcare are:
- Hawaii
- Massachusetts
- Connecticut
- Washington
- Rhode Island
The five worst states for healthcare are:
- Mississippi
- Arkansas
- West Virginia
- Oklahoma
- Alabama
