15 states with the fewest staffed hospital beds — all are under 5,000

Hospitals and health systems in states where the coronavirus hit the hardest are looking for places to expand quickly to make sure they have enough beds for patients during the coronavirus outbreak.

Here are the 15 states with fewer than 5,000 staffed beds, according to data from the American Hospital Directory. The data was gathered based on the most recent Medicare cost report for non-federal, short term acute care hospitals.

3. New Mexico: 3,917
4. Maine: 2,893
5. South Dakota: 2,735
6. Hawaii: 2,583
7. Idaho: 2,470
8. Rhode Island: 2,424
9. New Hampshire: 2,266
10. Delaware: 2,072
11. Montana: 2,202
12. North Dakota: 2,003
13. Wyoming: 1,261
14. Alaska: 1,235
15. Vermont: 828
