Alyssa Rege -

More than 50,000 vied for admission into a U.S. medical school during the 2017-18 academic year. Less than half (43.1 percent) of candidates were accepted, according to admissions statistics from the Association of American Medical Colleges cited by U.S. News & World Report.

U.S. News received data from 120 ranked medical schools for its annual survey. That data revealed only one of the 10 medical schools that received the most applications during the 2017-18 school year ranked among U.S. News' Best Medical Schools 2019 for primary care or research.

The 10 medical schools on the list received an average of 11,779 applications during the 2017-18 school year, which is more than double the average number of applications received by all ranked schools (5,687).
