Massachusetts is the healthiest state in the U.S., according to United Health Foundation's 2017 health rankings.

The foundation's 28th annual America's Health Rankings examines 35 measures spanning behaviors, community and environment, policy, clinical care and outcomes data. The report benchmarks each state to measure progress, track new trends and inform public health improvements.

The nation continues to face widespread public health challenges, as the premature death rate in America increased for the third consecutive year, up 3 percent since 2015. Cardiovascular deaths increased for the second year in a row across the U.S., and deaths related to drug use grew 7 percent in the past year alone.
