10 cities with the highest, lowest income inequality

Kelly Gooch -

Atlanta has the highest income inequality among the nation's metro areas, according to an analysis by Zippia, a career search and employment services company.

To determine income inequality, Zippia used the American Community Survey 2012-2016 dataset. It then examined the Gini coefficient, a measurement of income inequality, for cities with populations of more than 100,000. A higher Gini coefficient represents higher income inequality.

Here are the 10 cities with the highest income inequality, based on the analysis:

1. Atlanta

2. New Orleans

3. Miami

4. College Station, Texas

5. Providence, R.I.

6. Cincinnati

7. Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

8. New York City

9. Sandy Springs, Ga.

10. Tampa, Fla.

Here are the 10 cities with the lowest income inequality:

1. West Jordan, Utah

2. Surprise, Ariz.

3. Gilbert, Ariz.

4. West Valley City, Utah

5. Thornton, Colo.

6. Temecula, Calif.

7. Pearland, Texas

8. Highlands Ranch, Colo.

9. Lewisville, Texas
