University of Louisville President Wants Audit of State Indigent Care Funds

University of Louisville President James Ramsey, PhD, recently asked the Kentucky auditor's office to conduct an assessment of a trust fund that distributes indigent care cash to University Hospital, according to a Courier-Journal report.

The Quality and Charity Care Trust was established in 1983 to dole out money from state and local governments to University Hospital, which serves as Louisville's safety net hospital. Between state and local governments, University Hospital receives roughly $32 million each year from the trust, but that figure is far below the hospital's indigent care costs, which totaled $89 million in 2010, according to the report.

Dr. Ramsey said in the report a review of the trust would confirm that the program is "utilized to provide the best healthcare to the underserved in our community and state."

The board of the QCCT, appointed by the University of Louisville, has not met in more than two years.
