UnitedHealthcare Exec: ICD-10 Will Improve Healthcare

UnitedHealthcare Chief Clinical Officer Sam Ho, MD, told a conference yesterday that ICD-10 will be a big technological shift for the healthcare system, but ultimately, ICD-10 "allows for a type of precision that we've never had before, which enables more meaningful data and analytics."

Dr. Ho made the remarks at the American Health Information Management Association's ICD-10-CM/PCS and Computer-Assisted Coding Summit. He also said hospitals and providers will make a smoother transition to ICD-10 if their assessments focus on the biggest coding and billing risks.

"It is important for an organization to develop a sound assessment strategy that includes the application of analytics that can help identify the most pressing areas of risk to ensure there is a plan for addressing the issues that matter most," Dr. Ho said.
