UnitedHealth Group's Profit Falls 1.1% in 4Q, Rises 7.5% in 2012

UnitedHealth Group's earnings in the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2012 dipped 1.1 percent from last year's fourth quarter, totaling $1.24 billion, but overall 2012 performance improved 7.5 percent from 2011.

The parent company of the largest U.S. health insurer also posted $28.8 billion in total revenue the last quarter of 2012, up 11 percent year-over-year. However, total operating costs grew 11.8 percent in the last quarter with a $26.7 billion price tag.

Medical costs jumped 11.7 percent compared to previous-year fourth quarter results. In October, UnitedHealth announced a huge 26 percent spike in third-quarter profits attributable to slowed medical costs, a trend that seems to have corrected itself.

For the entire 2012 fiscal year, UnitedHealth pulled in $110.6 billion in revenue, up 8.6 percent from 2011, while earnings rose 7.5 percent to $5.53 billion.

In October, the health insurer also announced it acquired a 90 percent stake of Amil Participações, the largest healthcare company in Brazil.
