BCBS of Michigan to Spend $170M to Enlarge Medicaid Coverage

In an effort to expand national Medicaid coverage, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan will spend $170 million with Independence Blue Cross of Philadelphia to have 50 percent ownership in AmeriHealth Mercy Family of Companies, according to a Detroit Free Press report.

AmeriHealth Mercy is an HMO that provides Medicaid coverage to 800,000 Medicaid recipients in three states, the report said. BCBS of Michigan is entering the Medicaid market as the PPACA will expand Medicaid coverage to roughly 16 million people by 2019.
