Bamberg County Hospital in South Carolina to Cease Inpatient Services

John Hales, administrator of Bamberg County (S.C.) Hospital, announced the hospital will be ceasing all inpatient serves over the next two to three months, according to a Times and Democrat report.

The hospital's decision was a response to "slowing down" and "deteriorating" inpatient volumes. Although inpatient services will be shut down, the hospital plans to shift its resources and attention to emergency and outpatient services.

The move is also expected to help the hospital save significant amounts of money. Bamberg County Hospital had a net loss of $2.4 million in the nine months ending in May and filed for Chapter 9 bankruptcy in June.

Under a recently approved merger agreement, Bamberg County and Barnwell (S.C.) County hospitals will merge and be acquired by Dobbs Equity Partners, which will then begin Chapter 9 bankruptcy proceedings to reorganize debt. The new health system will merge the two hospitals and build a new regional facility, which will offer expanded specialty services currently not available in the region. Two ambulatory care centers are also planned.
