5 Largest Commercial Payors Post $3.17B Profit in 2Q

UnitedHealth Group, WellPoint, Aetna, Cigna and Humana — the five largest commercial and investor-owned health insurers — posted a cumulative profit of $3.17 billion in the second quarter of the 2012 fiscal year.

This past quarter's results were down 5.4 percent compared with the second quarter of FY 2011. UnitedHealth Group, the largest health insurer in the United States in both revenues and enrollment, again represented the plurality of 2012's first quarter profit and was the only one of the "big five" insurer to post a positive profit gain.

Here are the specific first-quarter earnings results of those five commercial payors.

1. UnitedHealth Group continued its sound financial growth as the health insurer posted a profit of $1.34 billion in the second quarter of fiscal year 2012.

2. Profit at Indianapolis-based health insurer WellPoint dropped 8.3 percent in the second quarter ended June 30, 2012, from $701.6 million in 2011 to $643.6 million.

3. Aetna reported second quarter net income of $457.6 million for the three months ended June 30, 2012 — a 14.7 percent decline from last year's total of $536.7 million.

4. Health insurer Cigna's second quarter profit was down 3 percent, from $391 million last year to $380 million this year, but the figures still beat analysts' estimates.

5. Humana reported second quarter net income of $356 million, a 22.6 percent plunge from last year's total of $460 million.
