5 Largest Commercial Health Insurers Tally $3.64B in 3Q Profit

The five largest commercial and investor-owned health insurers — UnitedHealth Group, WellPoint, Aetna, Cigna and Humana — posted a massive cumulative profit of $3.64 billion in the third quarter of the 2012 fiscal year.

This past quarter's results were up 18.6 percent compared with the third quarter of FY 2011 as four out of the "big five" insurers posted gains. UnitedHealth Group, the largest health insurer in the United States in both revenues and enrollment, led the pack with $1.56 billion in third-quarter profits — or roughly 43 percent of the total.


Here are the specific third-quarter earnings results of those five commercial payors.

1. Third-quarter profit at UnitedHealth Group rose 22.5 percent, from $1.27 billion in 2011 to $1.56 billion this year.

2. WellPoint's net income in the third quarter of fiscal year 2012 increased 1.2 percent from a year ago, from $683.2 million in 2011 to $691.2 million this year.

3. Aetna recorded a positive third quarter compared with its more recent second quarter, as profit crept up 2 percent year-over-year. Aetna's profit totaled $499.2 million in the third quarter of 2012 compared with $490.4 million last year.

4. Fiscal year 2012 for Cigna got a major boost, as the health insurer reported net income of $466 million in the third quarter — a 154 percent boost from the $183 million reported last year.

5. Net income at Humana dropped 4.3 percent in the third quarter of 2012 compared with last year, totaling $426 million.
