The World Health Organization will implement "wide-ranging reforms" to support its five-year plan of helping 3 billion more people globally, the group announced March 6.

The WHO's "triple billion" plan aims to achieve the following goals within five years:

  • Get 1 billion people universal healthcare coverage
  • Offer 1 billion people better protection from health emergencies
  • Improve the health and well-being of 1 billion more people

The organization will adopt a new corporate structure modeled around four pillars: programs, emergencies, business operations, and external relations and governance. The WHO will also create an emergency preparedness division to support its outbreak infection and response work.

"Our vision remains the same as it was when we were founded in 1948: the highest attainable standard of health for all people," WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, PhD, said in a press release. "But the world has changed, which is why we have articulated a new mission statement for what the world needs us to do now: to promote health, keep the world safe and serve the vulnerable."
