The CDC reported 275 new cases of vaping-related illnesses this week, bringing the national case count to 1,080 as of Oct. 1.

Six updates:

1. Vaping-related illnesses have occurred in 48 states, two more than a week prior. Only Alaska and New Hampshire have not reported cases.

2. Eighteen people have died from the illnesses in 15 states.

3. About 70 percent of patients are male, and 80 percent are under age 35.

4. Health officials are urging people to abstain from vaping or using e-cigarettes until they can identify a common source of the cases.

5. A new study from researchers at Rochester, Minn.-based Mayo Clinic suggests the illnesses may be caused by chemical fumes, not oils in the vaping products as previously hypothesized.
