The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs will share patient mortality data from its EHR with the CDC to support its Modernizing Death Reporting project, the agency announced Feb. 7.
The collaboration will give the CDC more timely access to mortality data and will mitigate any loss of data value brought on by interoperability challenges. As part of the agreement, the VA will work to drive data sharing by expanding the availability of Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources-based application programming interfaces.
"Delivering data directly to CDC's systems in this manner underscores VA's commitment to a modern interoperability strategy," VA Secretary Robert Wilkie said in a news release. "We look forward to future opportunities to enhance our partnerships and champion interoperability across the federal government."
