University of North Carolina sees 30 cases of possible norovirus

Brian Zimmerman -

Officials with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill on Monday confirmed three cases of norovirus among students, according to The News & Observer.

Campus health officials have treated about 30 students for symptoms related to norovirus. The outbreak has had an outsized effect on the university's Greek community, and one of the confirmed cases occurred in a sorority woman. The university's Panhellenic Council postponed sorority rush week by several days due to the illnesses, according to the report.

Symptoms of norovirus include stomach pain, fever, vomiting and diarrhea. The virus can be transmitted via person-to-person contact, or contact with contaminated surfaces and food. The illness causes 56,000 to 71,000 hospitalizations and 570 to 800 deaths every year, according to the CDC.
