University of Maryland student dies; 5 other adenovirus cases reported

A college student attending College Park-based University of Maryland died from an adenovirus-associated illness, according to The Washington Post.

The University of Maryland said in a tweet Nov. 20 that the death was an isolated case. Another statement cited by The Washington Post indicated there have been five more reported adenovirus cases.

Olivia Paregol, a college student at the University of Maryland, was admitted to the intensive care unit at Baltimore-based Johns Hopkins Hospital and died Nov. 18.

The University of Maryland indicated it would ramp up its infection prevention by cleaning "high-touch" surfaces in addition to raising awareness of the illness. Ms. Paregol lived in Elkton Hall, where mold was found earlier this year. The university said there is no connection between the mold exposure and the adenovirus cases.
